My school, my chance -
assistance to Roma children in learning and integration |
|
Since
2006 NSHC's
volunteers provide assistance in learning
and social integration to
a group of Roma children from primary school "József Attila"
Novi Sad.
In June 2010 the Department of Social and
Child Care of the City of Novi Sad supported these
activities within the project ''My school, my chance''.
The project aims to help Roma children in coping with the
school curriculum and successful completion of school, but
also to improve their social skills, confidence and
self-esteem. More than 100 Roma children are involved in
creative workshops, extra classes and extracurricular
activities.
All activities are lead by 25 educated NSHC volunteers,
mostly students. They are, in addition to regular
educational workshops, paying home visits, cooperating with
teaching staff, and organizing various events, such as going
to the movies, socializing with other children and so on.
Project activities:
a)
Educational workshops for children who go to school - help
with with the school curriculum, help in writing homework,
preparing for the tests, regular monitoring of progress of
children in school.
b) Creative workshops -
entertaining activities important for developing social
skills and confidence.
c) Other activities
- trips, visits to the cinema, theater, socializing with
other children and so on.
d) Home visits to
children's families to encourage parents' active support to
education of their children. Volunteers talk to parents
about problems in the education of their children, work to
increase motivation for education and advise parents on how
to solve problems they encounter.
e) Visits to schools children are attending or are to
enroll. Volunteers work together with teachers in solving
some of the problems that Roma children face in education. |

Field Trip to
Petrovaradin Fortress,
11 June
2011 |
|
At the beginning of June,
volunteers have organized a field trip to Petrovaradin
Fortress for a group of school children from Adice
settlement.
The following is a report
in pictures and impressions from volunteers and children...
:) |
|

One elderly man
approached us,
he
was
rather interested in our group and
he asked
the
children
whether they are
from
Morocco:),
but
the
children
have
responded
that they are
from
Germany!
:
D
He
was
very
sweet,
so
we asked him
to
take
our photo.
And
the photo
turned out
great!

We had a great time at the fortress.
The children were
great
and
only
one
plastic
bottle
ended
where
it
should not.
We visited
the Museum
of Novi Sad
and
we were
delighted with
the
exhibited objects,
furniture,
porcelain,
musical instruments from
the era
of Baroque,
Biedermeier
...
and
beautiful
works
of German
and
Japanese masters.
After
that
we enjoyed our sandwiches
and played
games
such
as
"Kaladont"
and
"Bananas"
:D
The latter
was
particularly
good,
everyone
must
try it
:D

Marathon at Fruska Gora, 7 May 2011 |
Volunteers
of NSHC organized
a field trip to Fruska Gora for a group of Roma children
from Adice settlement.
Children and volunteers had great
time: they participated in a walk
(also known as Eastern marathon)
in the length of 17km, and
played soccer and volleyball with the other
participants of the marathon.
These activities
are part of a project supported by the City
Administration for Social and
Child Protection in Novi Sad.

Erste Bank
Volunteers for Roma children |
|
|
|
With
the support of Erste Bank, NSHC organized a trip to Strazilovo
for 30 Roma children aged 11 to 17 years from Adice
settlement, on Saturday, 25 September 2010.
Volunteers from Erste Bank and NSHC
spent four hours in various
activities with children in one of
the favorite resorts nearby Novi Sad.
Together with children, they have
participated in numerous sports and creative activities:
playing badminton and volleyball,
''Catch a ball'' game,
making jewelry and greeting cards,
drawing and painting,
and the like.
All the
children received gifts from Erste Bank (school supplies,
sweets, t-shirts and hats), and they responded with a
t-shirt with their signatures,
drawings and messages.
This
kind of support to Roma children, with whom NSHC
continuously works for more than
four years, is a
valuable contribution to our efforts to
strengthen and assist them to
successfully learn, persist in
education and to integrate more easily.
These children rarely have the opportunity to leave
their settlements and to develop social skills through
field trips and socializing with
non-Roma population. Therefore, the opportunity to go on
a trip out of town and spend quality time with the
volunteers has been very
significant for them.
Both children and volunteers
will keep very fond memories
of this trip. We believe
that the successful cooperation between
NSHC and Erste Bank for the benefit of the Roma
children, that began
with this joint action,
is going to be continued
in the future.
