World AIDS Day |
|
Today is World AIDS Day and
NSHC will mark with the action "Zone
Without Discrimination" in the centre
of Novi Sad, together with Youth
of JAZAS, EHO, and
The Red Line. Information
materials on HIV infection and condoms will
be distributed during the action. A group of young
will perform a short play on
discrimination against people living with HIV.
According to the Vojvodina Institute
of Public Health, 26 new cases of HIV infection
were recorded in Vojvodina last year, and there are
221 people living with HIV.
NSHC works on prevention of HIV
infection in marginalized groups, mainly
Roma population. In the first nine months of this year we
held 75 workshops in Roma settlements in Novi Sad, Zrenjanin,
Backa Palanka, Ruma, and Apatin.
We informed and educated 1,296
young Roma about
basic facts related to HIV transmission and prevention.

Shelter for women victims of trafficking |
|
Novi Sad has
opened its first shelter for trafficked women, as part of
the "Protection and Integration of Victims of Trafficking
in AP Vojvodina" project, which NSHC and Centre for
Social Welfare implement in partnership. On this occasion,
Minister of Labor and Social Policy Rasim Ljajic said that
there is a growing number of Serbian citizens who are
victims of trafficking. "This year there were 284 cases, of
which 206 women and 78 men. Women and girls are victims of
sexual exploitation while men and boys usually are the
victims of labor exploitation", he said.
President of the Assembly of Novi Sad Aleksandar Jovanovic
said ithat there were 26 cases of human trafficking
registered in Novi Sad. Head of the Anti-Trafficking Police
Department in Novi Sad Sinisa Hrgić said that the police
arrested 14 perpetrators of this crime in 2011. Opening of
the shelter has been supported by the Joint Programme of
UNHCR, IOM, and UNODC to combat human trafficking in Serbia.
The project was created under the auspices of the United
Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN.GIFT),
and funded by the governments of Belgium and Switzerland, as
well as UN.GIFT. Read more

Primary
schools "Zarko Zrenjanin'' in Apatin,''Samu Mihalj in Becej,
and "Vuk Karadzic" in Novi Sad, have organized presentations
of the "All Different, All Equal" project for school staff,
parents and pupils, and representatives of organizations and
institutions from local communities. They emphasized the
basic idea of the project, to encourage the development of
inclusive culture, policy and practice in primary schools of
AP Vojvodina. In all three schools there will be made plans
for inclusive development, and various training sessions and
lectures for staff, parents and students awill be held on
issues concerning respect for diversity in education.

In the press hall of the
Government of AP Vojvodina, a press conference
was held to mark the beginning of the
"All Different, All
Equal" project that
NSHC implements with its associate -
Provincial Secretariat for
Education, Administration and National
Communities.
Journalists were addressed by deputy
secretary Dr. Zoltan Jeges,
NSHC program coordinator,
Danijela Korac-Mandic, and representatives of
partner schools in this project,
Klara Kurin-Barta from Becej
and Sanja Tadic from Apatin.
The goal of the project is to
initiate the creation of an inclusive
culture, policy and practice in primary schools in Vojvodina,
in order to enable
equal participation of all children in education,
regardless of their gender, disability, social or ethnic
origin. The project is funded by the
EU Delegation in Serbia, within the
''Support to Civil Society'',
financed by the EU. |

Second Regional Meeting of Roma Leaders |
|
The
second Regional Meeting of Roma Leaders from Bulgaria,
Romania, Macedonia, and Serbia has been held at Lake Ohrid,
Macedonia, from 10 to 14 July 2011. More than 40
participants from four countries gathered to discuss the
protection of rights and prevention of violence and
discrimination against the Roma population. The meeting has
been attended by representatives of the Macedonian
government, Mr. Dusko Minovski from the National Commission
for Protection against Discrimination, Mr. Daut Selimi,
Deputy Ombudsman of the Republic of Macedonia, and Mr.
Redzep Ali Cupi, director of the Agency for development and
improvement of education in minority communities. Regional
Meeting has been organized within the project "Protection
of Rights and Prevention of Violence and Discrimination
against Roma". |

The project ''All
Different, All Equal'' that NSHC had
submitted to the EU ''Support to Civil Society'' call for
proposals in Serbia has been selected as one of 43 projects
that are going to be financially supported during this and
the following year. This project will initiate creation of
an inclusive culture, policy, and practice in primary
schools in Vojvodina, thus enhancing equal participation of
all children in education, regardless of their gender,
disability, social or ethnic background. Our partners in
this project are primary schools ''Zarko Zrenjanin'' in
Apatin and ''Samu Mihaly'' in Becej. |

Social Inclusion and
Discrimination of
Roma |
|
Together
with NGO "Praxis" and with participation of
''Roma Educational Center''
Subotica, NSHC has held a
panel discussion on social inclusion and combating
discrimination against Roma in Serbia. Praxis and NSHC
presented their activities in providing legal assistance and
advocacy for the protection and promotion of Roma rights,
with special emphasis on the rights of people who do not
have identity documents and the obstacles they face in
trying to obtain them. In the panel
discussion that followed, representatives of Novi Sad
City administration and provincial
government participated.

Healthy Lifestyles for
Youth |
|
With the
support from the City Health Department, NSHC has started
implementation of the project "Drug-Free Living - Promotion
of Healthy Lifestyles among Youth". The goal of the project
is to contribute to better health of young people, through
improvement of life skills and provision of psychological
counseling services. The young are going to be offered a
variety of trainings in the area of stress management,
emotional intelligence, and assertive communication. For
