Roma Girls Education Initiative

CARE Serbia office and the Novi Sad Humanitarian Centre (NSHC) are implementing the project ''Roma Girls Education Initiative'' with the support of Telethon Fund (CARE Norway).
The project builds on the results of a successfully completed pilot project "Chances and Choices for Roma Girls", which lasted from September 2008 to May 2010.

The Initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of girls' education in the Roma community, to build skills and confidence of Roma girls, and to advocate for greater support to education of Roma women at local, provincial and national authorities.

Roma women are the least educated women in Serbia, with the highest percentage of illiteracy: it was estimated that 80% of Roma women are formally illiterate, with the upper limit of four grades of primary school completed, without any qualifications. In most cases, Roma women do not decide freely on their education. Significant number of Roma girls enrolled in primary school drop out in early puberty, in order to get married and take care of children and household.

The project provides education and counseling support for two groups of young Roma and non-Roma people in Novi Sad and Becej. They will prepare and perform ten forum theater performance on education of Roma women. In addition to this, a number of activities with Roma communities are planned, as well as intense advocacy activities for the rights of Roma women to education.
The project is being implemented from 1 December 2010 to 30 November 2011.
