"In the past, I was always borrowing grinders, drills, welding machine and the other tools from my friends so I could work. Now, that I’ve received some tools through RAISE project...I am speechless. It means a lot to me. Now I can get a job easier and provide livelihood."

RAISE – Rural and Agricultural Integration within a Supportive Environment

In January 2009 NSHC started implementation of a two-year project "Rural and Agricultural Integration within a Supportive Environment - RAISE". The project comprehensively helps the refugees and the internally displaced persons to resolve their problems with the housing, unemployment and social exclusion.

This project has been implemented by Novi Sad Humanitarian Center, in cooperation with the Foundation Ana and Vlade Divac and financially supported by Unidea UniCredit Group Foundations. NGO "Vizija" is engaged as a sub-implementing agency.

Through this project, the economic and social help has been received by 100 families, mostly from the collective centres whose housing issue was solved through the action ‘You can too’ of the Foundation Ana & Vlade Divac (HOD)

In order to become economically independent, every family receives financial and professional support to start and develop their own business. They are being helped by economical experts, agronomists and psychologists. The families have been informed about the possibilities they have in the new environment and they have also been supported in achieving their rights in social and health protection, getting their papers, employment, etc.

Project beneficiaires' stories:

"We came from Pristina and we lived with our three children in the collective centre in Sijerinska spa for nine years. The conditions were bad, we were all in one room, there was a shared bathroom...

Just as we had lost all our hope, the foundation Ana and Vlade Divac provided us a roof over head in Tovarisevo, a village in Voivodina. We settled in nicely. We’ve also had a lot of help from our neighbors.

When we had the opportunity to get a grant for our ownusiness, we didn’t waste any time. With the help of agronomists, we wrote a business plan for growing plants in the greenhouse. Until then, we hadn’t had any experience in that business, but we listened carefully, followed the advice from the expert, we called him...and now you can already see the results.

We are slowly making progress. Together with the nice weather, the fruits from our greenhouse are also arriving. We are selling them and we also monitor which products sell the most, so that in future we plant more of those. We are in our own house, we have our own income. Our life started again."

"We are from Mostar and we have been refugees since 1992. We lived with our three children in private and collective accommodation until 2008, when our biggest wish to resolve our housing issue finally came through, thanks to the Foundation Ana and Vlade Divac. We moved into our house in Elemir, redecorated it, and tidied the yard and the garden...

Now, our house looks like a postcard.

However, the adjustment to the new environment did not go so smoothly. It was mostly because of the small and irregular income from occasional, seasonal jobs. We got our chance when we applied for help in launching our own business, within RAISE project. We handed in our business plan for production of eggs and we received help for buying 240 laying hen.

There were ups and downs in the business, but we haven’t regretted it for a moment or thought about quitting. With the support of the experts, and the first days of spring, our income has increased. We are satisfied and support each other. We are happy that we are together and that we have a job. We are very grateful for the house we like to call ‘our nest’. We still keep the ball with Divac’s signature and we invest all our hopes into this business."
